Extinct sabertooth cats were social, found strength in numbers, study shows

The sabertooth cat (Smilodon fatalis), one of the most iconic extinct mammal species, was likely to be a social animal, living and hunting like lions today, according to new scientific research. The species is famous for its extremely long canine teeth, which reached up to seven inches in length and extended below the lower jaw.

Keys Can be Copied From Afar, UC San Diego Computer Scientists Show

UC San Diego computer scientists have built a software program that can perform key duplication without having the key. Instead, the computer scientists only need a photograph of the key. “We built our key duplication software system to show people that their keys are not inherently secret,” said Stefan Savage, the computer science professor from UC San Diego’s Jacobs School of Engineering who led the student-run project. “Perhaps this was once a reasonable assumption, but advances in digital imaging and optics have made it easy to duplicate someone’s keys from a distance without them even noticing.” More

Ribbon-cutting set for new UF nature trails at ‘natural laboratory’

WHO: University of Florida President Bernie Machen, UF faculty and students.

WHAT: Ribbon-cutting for new nature trails at the UF Natural Area Teaching Laboratory, a 60-acre tract of woods, wetlands and other natural areas used to teach students and the public about ecology, biodiversity and Florida flora and fauna. The short self-guided trails, built over the past two years with $100,000 from Student Government, provide tours of four common Florida habitats: upland hardwood, longleaf pine, old field and wetlands.

WHEN: 4:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3

WHERE: The trailhead for the wetlands trail, located in the Natural Area Park across the street from the Entomology/Nematology Building, 970 Natural Area Drive.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Several University of Florida experts are available to discuss the upcoming presidential election.

Richard S. Conley is an associate professor of political science. He is a scholar of the American presidency and researches presidential-congressional relations.
